A SALT ANTHOLOGY

2023

Photography: Samuel Duarte

"[...] A Salt Anthology is a poetic reflection on the relationships that make up an ecosystem. By focusing on
the current fragile state of the salinas de Aveiro and Samouco, artists Inês Coelho da Silva and Joana
Viveiros composed a vibrant new body of work that reflects on materials, ideas and stories of the land.
Studying salt, algae, juncos, birds, mud, salicórnia and much more, the exhibition is framed as a
collection of visual stories where scientific knowledge mix with craft and speculation. Ideas circulate
freely between the objects and their narrations, inviting the audience to deepen into apparent and
hidden references scattered thought the gallery. During the time of the show, several natural processes
will gradually transform the artworks, embracing the symbolic and ethical dimension of slow practices
of craft and care over capitalistic velocity and disruption. [...]" -

"[...]Fragmented ideas, stories and identities find a new sensorial and poetical binding in the works of
Coelho da Silva and Viveiros. Reinterpreting salt not as a commodity but as a complex crossway of
poems and notes is a necessary political stand to embrace equitable coexistence with the more-thanhuman
entities, especially with the small and overlooked. As artworks like tales narrate the hidden
journey of sea salt and its origin, land and imagination reveal to talk the interchangeable languages." - Fragment of
